By the end of last season, the Sioux City Musketeers had two of the top goalies in the USHL.
Despite splitting time down the stretch, Connor Girard and Kyle Hayton each ranked in the top five in goals against average.
The Muskies brought 13 goalies into camp to battle it out for the starting job, including Girard and Hayton.
Also in camp is Evan Cowley, one of their top phase 2 draft picks.
But, as new head coach Jay Varady said in his press conference Thursday, despite what they may have accomplished last year, no player is guaranteed a spot in the fall.
Varady says this tryout camp is phase one of the evaluation process, and would ultimately like to take three or four goalies to St. Louis for the team's second tryout camp in July.
"Good goalies make good coaches," Varady said. "We'll see. That's why we have training camp. They're going to sort it out themselves. That's why we're here. It's going to be a process. That's not to say other guys don't come along and push those three. I'm not set that those are the three guys that are going to play here next year."
The tryout camp wraps up Saturday. A future prospects and main camp all-star game is scheduled for Sunday.
