A man is in critical condition at a Sioux City hospital, after the car he was driving collided with a train on the tracks in rural Dakota County, Nebraska.

Authorities say Tony Josta of rural Homer was driving his car at the intersection of Highway 77 and 225th Street.

After the car was hit, it skidded down a nearby field. Dakota County sheriff's deputies say Josta was air-lifted to Sioux City's Mercy Medical Center.

"The train was oncoming. When he entered the travel portion of the track, the actual engine collided with the vehicle," said Penny Kleinberg, deputy for the Dakota County Sheriff's Department.

The gravel road was blocked off by authorities as they cleaned up after the crash, which is still under investigation.
