A northwest Iowa man accidentally shot himself while trying to shoot a caged raccoon Sunday morning.

Authorities say 45-year-old Tim McCormick of Correctionville caught the raccoon outside of his home.

He then took it to Copeland Park to shoot it, but accidentally shot himself in the leg with his .38 caliber handgun.

He was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City for treatment.

The shooting is under further investigation.

The raccoon was uninjured and released back into the woods.
