Lack of public comment may clear the way for CF expansion


CF Industries may be close to clearing a hurdle in their Port Neal expansion plans.

Monday night, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources held a public hearing for comment on the company's air quality permit.

CF has proposed a $1.7 billion expansion at its nitrogen facility near Salix, Iowa.

The DNR says their proposal is not projected to violate the National Ambient Air Quality Standards.

Area residents don't seem too concerned.  Not a single person showed up to comment.

"If there are no comments then usually we have them issued within two weeks from the end of the comment period, if there are significant comments, then obviously we have to resolve those before we can issue the permits," explained Gary Smith, an Iowa DNR Sr. Environmental Engineer.

The DNR will take written comments through July 1st.
