SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

The men and women, who serve in the military, sacrifice so much to defend the freedoms we enjoy everyday. Larry "Tommy" Thompson is no exception.

Tuesday night, friends and family gathered at Holy Spirit Retirement Home to honor Thompson for his service.

He joined the army in 1966 and worked up the rank of Sergeant Major. He signed up to serve in Vietnam, but didn't need to go.

Thompson, who's nickname is "tanker," because he was the commander of a tank, retired 30 years to the day he joined the army.

"We knew it would make him happy. He's still a soldier at heart, he always will be, and he misses it very much," said Elaine Thompson, wife.

Several other veterans were honored with a pin and flag. The Iowa Hospice by Harden Healthcare is behind this project, which is called "We Honor Veterans".
