INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) -

Authorities say a 7-year-old girl has died after an apartment fire in Independence Friday morning.

Rescuers were called to a four-unit apartment building on 11th Avenue NE and 2nd Street around 4:15 a.m.

Six family members lived in unit #9 -- the girl's parents, her uncle and two other children ages five and six, according to Rick Wulfekuhle, emergency management coordinator for Buchanan County.

Neighbors say the parents are Steve and Jen Posey. Co-workers tell KWWL both worked at Four Oaks in Independence.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported the child who died was named Jaileigh Posey. The other two children were Connor and Lilie. The uncle is Brett Posey.

Wulfekuhle says the girl's uncle got home from working a night shift, went to visit a friend and then came home to find the apartment on fire.

When neighbor Mary Close came to the building, she says Steve Posey was outside, and told her 911 had already been called. Close says she called the children's mother, who was not home and had not been contacted.

The other children and their father were taken to the Buchanan County Health Center, then transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

People living in the other apartment units were displaced due to smoke and water damage.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, but have found a point of interest in the living room. Wulfekuhle says there was a computer desk with many plug-ins that appears to have the heaviest charring.

There are two accounts that have been set up to help the Posey family. The Steve and Jen Posey Benefit Fund is set up at Security State Bank at 231 1st Street East in Independence. You can also send gift cards to P.O. Box 44 Independence Iowa, 50644.  There is also the Jaileigh Posey Account at Veridian Credit Union that will help the family pay for Jaileigh's funeral, among other expenses.

Anyone wishing to donate physical items, such as sheets or something similar, can drop those off at Signs & More at 119 1st Street East in Independence.

A vigil is planned for Friday night at 9:30 p.m. at the high school in Independence.
