LE MARS, Iowa (KTIV) -
There are over 300 high school softball teams in Iowa, and only one of them is undefeated. Le Mars is 29-0 and ranked first in Class 4A for the first time in school history.
The Bulldogs actually lost to Sioux City North early in the season, but the Stars had to forfeit that game for using an ineligible player.
Le Mars is hitting .338 as a team and have outscored their opponents 230-23. They also have power. Their 22 home runs is tied for the fourth highest total in 4A.
The Bulldogs pitching staff has allowed less than one run per game, giving them an earned run average of 0.70. Senior Molly Renken is 23-0 and has allowed only seven earned runs all season.
The Bulldogs have exceeded everyone's expectations.
"The first part of our season is really tough. We play some tough teams," Head Coach Doug Heidebrink said. "We've got that Heelan tournament, Heelan, Akron. You know, we were hoping to be .500 that first couple of weeks. And, we ended up undefeated there and then a couple weeks, we were OK. We kept playing hard and kept playing really good ball and that was good and then it just kept falling in place."
"We had high goals set for the beginning of the year. Being 29-0 it is kind of a surprise," junior Madison Heidebrink added. "But, that's what we aim for."
LeMars will start regional play July 13. The state softball tournament begins in Fort Dodge on July 22.
