Siouxland patients reported to have severe intestinal illness

More cases of a severe intestinal illness have been identified, including two in Siouxland.

The illness, Cyclospora, has been confirmed by the Iowa Department of Public Health in at least two people in O'Brien County.

Lisa Youngers, head of the O'Brien County Public Health Department, says she's still working to identify the two cases and hopes to have more information tomorrow.

22 cases of Cyclospora infections have been identified statewide, in nine different counties.

It's a parasite that can cause symptoms of severe diarrhea and fatigue.

An investigation into the cause is underway.

But, until then, health officials recommend washing fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly.

If you experience any of the symptoms, talk to your doctor about getting tested.

There is treatment available.
