SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (KTIV/KUOO) -

A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held this Saturday for a city park in Spirit Lake that's been undergoing an extensive renovation over the past year or so.

Just some of the new amenities at Memorial Park include a second, brand new shelter house, a splash pad that was donated by an area Kiwanis Club, new play equipment, walkways, green spaces and more.

City crews are still putting some finishing touches on the project.

The project has been on the drawing boards several years.

City officials say it will serve as a major draw for those entering the city from the east on Highway 9.

A brief ceremony will be held as part of Saturday's ribbon cutting, part of this year's Spirit Lake Days Celebration.

The ribbon cutting will immediately follow a parade in the downtown area.

The public is cordially invited to attend.

Even though work has been continuing on the park itself, construction of the splash pad was completed just in time for the first hot days of the season, and so far it's been a real hit.

The splash pad has been temporarily closed the next couple of days so crews can finish up work on the park itself.
