Siouxland businesses learn about the Blue Zone Project

Sioux City businesses are getting a lesson on becoming blue.

Around 27 local businesses attended Thursday's Blue Zones Worksite class at Western Iowa Tech's campus.

Though Blue Zones officials led the class, they felt the business leaders would learn most from companies that have already gone through the process.

Van Meter, Sioux City's first Blue Zones Worksite, shared advice; as well as Unity Point Health-St. Luke's and Palmer Candy Company.

Both businesses are nearing the finish line in the race to become the next designated Blue Zones Worksite.

"Because it is so much a part of our culture and what we believe in for our employees, to have gotten this far in the process and to be able to help other worksites in the community also get there just means that many more people in the Siouxland area that's going to be working at a worksite that focuses on wellness," said Hanna Reinders, Human Resources Manager at Palmer Candy, Co.

The class also offered businesses the opportunity to register for the Blue Zones Program.

Officials say more than 20 Sioux City businesses are registered as of now.
