The American Legion in
Le Mars was a busy place Saturday, as Iowa
senator Tom Harkin paid a visit.

After a series of community fundraisers and a housing
and urban development grant, spearheaded by Harkin, the facade has been redone
to preserve the historic building.
Construction took seven months to complete, and includes
a new mural. Harkin hopes the facelift will spur other redevelopment
down the block.
"As I really just
look around, this really does brighten up this part of Main Street, too. And I think it has a
ripple effect. People start taking a little bit more pride. They start doing
things, fixing up other buildings," said Harkin.
"Looking at it. It
looks great. It feels great from the inside, there's more light, you feel more
comfortable from the inside. It's just a great feeling," said Stephen
Jester, a trustee for the American Legion in Le Mars.
