Le Mars, IA Legion unveils new digs

LE MARS, Iowa (KTIV) -

The American Legion in Le Mars was a busy place Saturday, as Iowa senator Tom Harkin paid a visit.

The side of this building had become worn down over the years.

After a series of community fundraisers and a housing and urban development grant, spearheaded by Harkin, the facade has been redone to preserve the historic building.

Construction took seven months to complete, and includes a new mural.  Harkin hopes the facelift will spur other redevelopment down the block.

"As I really just look around, this really does brighten up this part of Main Street, too. And I think it has a ripple effect. People start taking a little bit more pride. They start doing things, fixing up other buildings," said Harkin.

"Looking at it. It looks great. It feels great from the inside, there's more light, you feel more comfortable from the inside. It's just a great feeling," said Stephen Jester, a trustee for the American Legion in Le Mars.

The building is open six days a week for meetings and games.
