MASON CITY, Iowa (KTTC) -- A DNA sample has led to an arrest in a 19-year-old murder case in Mason City.

Michael Cisneros, 37, has been charged with first-degree murder in the July 1994 death of 20-month-old John Joseph Snyder Jr.

Mason City police announced the arrest during a news conference Monday afternoon.

John Joseph Snyder Sr. reported his 20-month-old son missing from their apartment on July 20, 1994. The boy's body was found the next day in Willow Creek just east of the Pennsylvania Ave. bridge in Mason City. An autopsy showed that the cause of death was drowning and a crushing skull injury.

DNA analysis was not done in 1994 because the technology wasn't available. In December 2002, Mason City police obtained a DNA analysis. In December 2012, Michael Cisneros was transported to the Oakdale Medical and Classification Center in Coralville. He was required to submit a DNA sample, which was entered into a state database.

In January 2013, a search of the DNA database revealed a match between the DNA sample submitted by Michael Cisneros and the profile taken from the boy's pajama bottoms.

Cisneros is being held at the Cerro Gordo County Jail.

Mason City police would not say what the relationship was between John Snyder Sr. and Cisneros.
