Explorers losing skid reaches seven

The Sioux City Explorers were held to four hits and lost their seventh straight game, 2-0, to Wichita on Monday night at Lewis and Clark Park.

Wichita pitcher Chris Smith threw eight scoreless innings while striking out nine. Josh New pitched a scoreless ninth inning as the first place Wingnuts (39-18) won for the eleventh straight time.

Sioux City (23-33) has scored just eleven runs during the seven game skid and have been shutout three times in their last five games.

X's starter Richard Salazar pitched five scoreless innings before C.J. Ziegler's RBI single in the sixth broke a scoreless tie. Sioux City relief pitcher Jimmer Kennedy gave up a run in the ninth.

Anthony Kaskadden had two hits to lead the Explorers offensive attack. Bryan Pounds and Peter Barrows were the only other Sioux City players to get a hit.

The three game series will end at 7:05 on Tuesday night.
