Farmers appreciate heat, want rain

Posted: Updated:
SHELL ROCK (KWWL) -

Wednesday's heat didn't keep people out of the fields. Workers have been preparing for detasseling, which is running about a week behind schedule.

Billy Rover, sales manager at Epley Bros Hybrids in Shell Rock, said weather is to blame for the late start.

"We got the heat that we needed, but now we could use some rain," he said.

Rover said the cool, wet, spring and snowfall in May contributed to some weak roots for the corn.

And with the dry ground, he said the only solution is timely rain.

"I'd take an inch of rain every week for the next four or five weeks, maybe even six weeks, and then frost somewhere around mid-October," he laughed. "But I don't think that's going to happen."

Rover said summer crops are a mixed bag.

"The corn that's good is good...as long as we get timely rains, it's going to be good. But the bad spots out there -- they're hard to judge. There's a lot of bad spots and there's fields that aren't even planted," he said.
