SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

Another Republican has entered what is an already crowded race for the seat Tom Harkin is vacating in the U.S. Senate.

State Senator Joni Ernst kicked off her campaign in her hometown of Red Oak, Iowa, Wednesday morning. She rounded out her day at McCarthy and Bailey's, in downtown Sioux City, Wednesday night.

In Sioux City, Ernst focused on the failures of the Affordable Care Act, issues with "cap and trade", and taxes. Ernst says current policies concern her about the future of the United States. "They hurt all of us, but it terrifies me to think of what these policies will do to my daughter's generation and their opportunities if we're not doing something to change course," said Joni Ernst, (R) U.S. Senate Candidate.

Ernst is one of five Republicans running for Tom Harkin's seat. Other GOP candidates include former U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker, Morningside College professor Sam Clovis, and Senator Chuck Grassley's former aide David Young. Businessman Mark Jacobs is "exploring" a run.

Democratic congressman Bruce Braley, of Waterloo, is his party's only candidate.
