Some very special benches will be dedicated in Pocahontas, Iowa.
Four new benches at Elbert Park were funded with grants from "Build it With Bags". That's a cooperative effort between the Iowa Grocers' Association, and several other organizations, to promote ways to recycle plastic grocery bags.
This year, the program chose 15 cities to receive the grants totaling more than 20-thousand dollars. "They help promote recycling of grocery bags so that they can be rebuilt and reused into things like park benches," said Brenda Vrba, Pocahontas Hometown Pride Cmte. "And they also promote using recyclable bags to come and get your groceries in."
The grant is part of a five year plan to beautify Pocahontas County. The county is also working with the organizations 'Keep Iowa Beautiful' and 'Trees Forever' to make Elbert park cleaner and more family friendly. "More playground equipment and that sort of stuff," said Eric List, Pocahontas Hometown Pride Cmte. "We have done some beautification on our Gateway Park at the entrance of town to new signs, new trees. We've also been doing Trees Forever, planting a bunch of trees around the community as well."
The four benches will be dedicated at 5:00pm Thursday night at Elbert Park in Pocahontas.
