Lamb producers are getting a small boost from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The USDA says it will purchase up to $5 million worth of lamb products to support federal nutrition assistance programs, including food banks.

The announcement comes at a challenging time for the domestic lamb industry.

Increased imports, excess supply and weather problems have added new pressures.

USDA officials say this purchase will help mitigate further downward prices and stabilize market conditions.

South Dakota Senator Tim Johnson applauds the move, calling it good news for sheep producers in his state.
