SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

A political hopeful made a stop in Sioux City, Friday.  Jim Mowrer shook hands with fellow Democrats, union members, and other voters on Historic 4th Street.

He's running for Republican Steve King's 4th district seat in the House of Representatives.

The Boone, Iowa native has spent the last three years working at the Pentagon as the special assistant to the undersecretary of the army, helping reform the Army's business operations.

A veteran of the Iraq war, defense policy is a cornerstone of Mowrer's campaign.

"Too many times Congress was a hindrance rather than a help to making our country a better place, to making it better, and to saving taxpayer money," said Mowrer.

Mowrer added that he's concerned the farm bill has become politicized.

A gun owner himself, Mowrer said he's against banning assault weapons.

The married father of two also said he supports a woman's right to choose.
