Sweet Sixteen: Estherville ready for annual corn celebration
Sweet Corn Days starts Aug. 1 in Estherville, Iowa.
ESTHERVILLE, Iowa (KTIV) -
When you grill out in the summer, you might fill your grill with meats and vegetables. One veggie that's popular in the Hawkeye State: sweet corn.
For 16 years, it's been all about the sweet corn in Estherville, Iowa. The first banners are now up in the downtown area, signaling the coming of Sweet Corn Days.
The festival brings thousands of visitors into the area for events like class reunions... but often, it's the corn that brings folks here.
Organizers say the biggest draw is free sweet corn.
"The Estherville Sweet Corn Days committee buys 6,000, that's 500 dozen ears of sweet corn. We shuck it, and we cook it ourselves in the morning. We start at about 7 o'clock and then we give it away to everyone who comes," said Lexie Hash, executive director for the Estherville Chamber of Commerce.
This year, Sweet Corn Days run from Aug. 1-4. In addition to that sweet corn, there will be a parade, races, pageants and fireworks. For the full list of events, we've created a link.
