Parents predicted to spend hundreds of dollars on back-to-school supplies
The National Retail Federation says families with school children will spend about $635 on back- to-school supplies.
This total includes shoes, clothes, and electronics, but it's actually about $50 less than last year.
Several Siouxland parents are already trying to tackle their school supply lists.
And, some people said it's difficult to budget before they go shopping, but they try to save when they can.
"They need a lot of the simple supplies like crayons and glue, which is cheap, but then you get into some of the notebooks and binders and stuff like that, and it gets a little bit more expensive," Renae Beeck, of Hinton, IA, said.
"It seems like it gets more expensive each year, so that's why we try to re-use some of the things from last year if we can," Lisa Doelman, of Sioux Center, IA, said.
Doelman, a mother of four, expected to spend about $200 on schools supplies for her kids, but said she ended up spending double that amount.
Renae Beeck said she hopes not to spend more than $80 on her two kids.
Nationwide, back-to-school spending is predicted to exceed $26 billion.
