Sam Richardson started three games last season at quarterback for Iowa State.
Iowa State was picked to finish ninth out of ten teams in a preseason Big 12 football media poll. The Cyclones met those reporters at the conference media day in Dallas.
Iowa State was 6-7 last year with a loss in the Liberty Bowl to Tulsa. That included a 3-6 mark in Big 12 play.
The Cyclones return the fewest starters in the Big 12 -- including just four on defense -- and their only preseason all-conference player is punter Kirby Van Der Kamp.
"As I've said it will also be the youngest group but I'd rather have a young athletic group that really enjoys playing and the process than any other alternative," said ISU head coach Paul Rhoads.
ISU used three different starting quarterbacks last season, but sophomore Sam Richardson has the job all to himself this season.
"We might have an advantage in that we have a quarterback that's returning that has three games under his belt," said ISU head coach Paul Rhoads. "We feel very good about his leadership and his level to be able to produce as we head into the season. But he's one of the few with experience that we have coming back."
Iowa State opens the season on Saturday, August 31st with a night game against Northern Iowa. Two weeks later on September 14, the Cyclones host the Hawkeyes.
