CORALVILLE (KWWL) -

An Arizona man who died after a violent confrontation with officers may have been under the influence of drugs.

Thomas Martinez, Jr., of Apache Junction, Ariz., was pronounced dead Tuesday evening at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, according to the Johnson County Attorney's Office on Wednesday afternoon.

Martinez reported entered an unnamed business in the 2400 block of Second Street in Coralville on Monday and began acting violently and destroying property, according to reports.

When Coralville Police arrived, they noticed Martinez sweating profusely and having mini seizures, according to the report.

Officers say the man's eyes were dilated and he was not speaking coherently, and suspected he was experiencing medical problems.

When the Johnson County Ambulance Service responded, Martinez became violent, flailing at officers and paramedics and striking an officer, according to officials.

Officers used a taser twice on Martinez to subdue him.

After paramedics administered an unnamed medication to Martinez, he stopped breathing. Paramedics began CPR and administered another medication, and Martinez began breathing again, according to reports.

Martinez was then transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he died Tuesday night, officials said.

Police believed Martinez may have "consumed multiple drugs" before entering the business Monday.

An autopsy will be performed on Martinez to determine cause of death, and laboratory analysis will also be completed, according to the Johnson County Attorney's Office.

The investigation is ongoing.
