Battle Creek, NE may not get federal aid to prevent future floods

The City of Battle Creek, Nebraska may not be getting aid from FEMA to protect it from future flooding.

Staff informed the Lower Elkhorn NRD Board yesterday that FEMA will not be helping the city with the cost of building a bypass channel designed to prevent future flooding from the Elkhorn River.

The request was originally denied last year, and the NRD appealed on behalf of the city.

City leaders say they haven't heard officially from FEMA either way on the appeal.

The project was designed in the wake of the 2010 flooding of the Elkhorn, and carries an estimated price tag of about $5.5M.
