LARCHWOOD, Iowa (KTIV) -

A fire department in Northwest Iowa has outgrown its current facility. They'll soon be moving into their new location.

Twenty-eight Larchwood, Iowa fire fighters currently have no off-street parking and are forced to share with the rest of the town parking on Main Street. There isn't always enough room to do that.

The new facility is located on the edge of town and will be around 8,600 square feet compared to the old building's 3,600 square feet.

Ground was broken on May 7. The main foundation has been laid, but Larchwood mayor Dean Snyders says there's no specific time line for completion.

Snyders, a volunteer fire fighter himself, says the major issue is safety.

"For us to get all our fire trucks out on a call got to be a little bit dangerous, so the need for room and location was pretty important for us," said Snyders.

Snyders says a grant from the Lyon County Riverboat Foundation made the project possible. He says they're hoping to finish the facility in the fall.
