Iowa lawmakers remember Col. George "Bud" Day

Western Iowa Congressman Steve King counted on Col. George "Bud" Day as a supporter and friend.

The pair would regularly go on hunting trips in Siouxland, where King says they talked policy and shared their passion for pheasants.

He says Day had a warrior's spirit and that his heart never left the heartland.

"Bud Day stepped up and served our country every day with every breath he served America, and he did it in a happy way, and in an inspiring way, and he gave the rest of us, he gave us inspiration and he gave us courage," Rep. Steve King, (R) Iowa said.

King says Day also taught him the value to have courage in your convictions.

Iowa's two U.S. Senators, Chuck Grassley and Tom Harkin are also remembering Colonel Day.

In a statement, republican Senator Grassley had this to say about Day's service and sacrifices, "he (Col. Day) leaves behind a legacy for which our men and women in uniform and fellow Americans will remember for generations to come."

"He was just an example of a great pilot, great fighter pilot, and someone who unflinching in his courage. He was just a great example to everyone, not just those of us that were in the military, I think to all young people about what it means to be brave in the face of danger," said Sen. Tom Harkin (D) Iowa.
