Sen. John McCain reflects on the passing of Col. Bud Day

During Colonel Day and Senator John McCain's imprisonment in North Vietnam, they were beaten, starved and tortured.

In spite of that, Day helped come up with a communications system among prisoners at the camp.

The messages passed involved the physical conditions of other POW's and the upcoming torture they may receive.

On March 14, 1973, Day was released from prison.

On Twitter, Senator McCain spoke highly of his former cell mate.

He said quote, Colonel Bud Day was my friend, my leader my inspiration.

He said Day was a true American hero.

During an interview several years ago, McCain had this to say about his comrade.

"Bud Day took the blows for those of us who followed his leadership"
