Sioux City East celebrates their 1-0 win over Cedar Rapids Xavier on Wednesday.
DES MOINES, Iowa (KTIV) -
There are just two high school baseball teams from Northwest Iowa still playing. Sioux City East and Bishop Heelan will each play in the state semifinals on Friday.
Both the Black Raiders and Crusaders won their first round games by identical 1-0 scores.
Wednesday night, East scored the only run of the game in the fifth. Dom Thompson-Williams singles to left to allow JJ Stephens to score to put East up 1-0.
Trey Lapke got the final out of the game, getting a strikeout with the bases loaded as East gets their first state win since 1997.
"I was hitting the ball hard all day. Coach told me to keep hitting it, it's going to fall eventually and it finally fell in a big situation," said Dom Thompson-Williams.
"They battled. They overcame some adversity with guys on and not very many outs," said East head coach Jared Ocker. "That's kind of the way we've been living the last week or two. The substate win, we survived some bad situations and executing on defense to get it done."
Here are the semifinal matchups for Friday night. Number-1 Bishop Heelan plays Davenport Assumption at noon. East will play unranked Clinton at 8 o'clock. Clinton upset number-1 Ankeny 10-8 in round one.
The 3A final is Saturday at six and the 4A Championship game is Saturday at 8.
