A Siouxland college brings the past to life

Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa held their second book brigade Friday and transferred 200 books from the old library, to the newly constructed learning commons.

Current students, faculty and alumni formed a line from the Ramaker Center to the Dewitt Learning Commons, and passed the books from the old facility to the new one.

The first book brigade happened in 1964.

David Van Engelhoven, who was part of the original book brigade, says the event brought back fond memories of his college years.

"There were 15 to 20 people who were involved in the original book brigade here, today. It just brings back memories of our youth when we were diligent college students working hard in lots of ways," says Engelhoven, Northwestern College Alumnus.

Folks who attended the book brigade got a sneak peek at the new learning commons which is in the final stages of construction.

Officials expect the facility to be up and running before classes begin in the fall.
