Lessons learned at Day's service

Saturday's service included many friends and fellow military men and women.  However, it also included people who didn't know Day personally.  Still, they knew his story and wanted to pay their respects.

Pat Collins brought her grandchildren in the hopes of giving them a real life history lesson.

"For them to honor Col. Day, who they did not know, but in years will hear about him, I think is important," Collins explained.

"He was injured.  They called him "Cat" because he had nine lives," her granddaughter Elizabeth Clay added.

"It was amazing.  I can't believe all the stuff that he did," said her brother, Andrew Clay.

The well wishes came from miles around.

"I knew that he was such a great patriot, that I knew it was only fitting that I should be here to give him some memory," said CMSgt Joe Haindfield who retired from the 185th Air Refueling Wing.

"He's just one of those people you'd just like to know more about," said Sloan, IA resident, Curt Koenig.

Many artifacts, from Day's helmet and uniform, to his medals were put on display Saturday as a reminder of his resilience and heroism.
