DES MOINES, Iowa (KTIV) -

Sioux City East's bid for their first state baseball championship fell short with a 9-3 loss to seventh-ranked Johnston in the Class 4A title game Saturday night at Principal Park.

East was also the runner-up in 1996 and 1997, the last time the Black Raiders were in the championship game. It was the third state title for Johnston.

East ran into trouble in the second inning. With two on, Travis Brenner singled to left. Brandon Carlson's throw home was close but Alex McCune slid in safely for a 1-0 Dragons lead.

Jake Westphal came in to pitch for East but Michael Kinning's base hit to right brought in another run to make it 3-0 Johnston. The Dragons would score five more runs to take an 8-0 lead.

In the 5th, the Black Raiders broke through with a run. With Hayden Godfrey on third, Jake McDonald singled to center to score Godfrey and it was 8-1.

But two batters later the rally was cut short when Dom Thompson-Williams lined to short and Jake McDonald was doubled up at second.

KTIV's Nick Filipowski was in Des Moines and will have post-game reaction on Sunday at 5 and 10.

East finishes their season with a 31-10 record. Johnston ends at 29-12.
