Kids have day at the lake after hours of community volunteering

STORM LAKE, Iowa (KTIV) -

Kindness and hard work do pay off.  Some fifth and sixth graders from Alta-Aurelia found out why volunteering can make a splash.

A peaceful day at the lake.  But that's not really what these kids had in mind.

"Going out and having fun on all the tubes, and watching all the people fall off," Michael Kueny, 6th grader.

About 30 members of the Partners in Excellence chapter of the Alta-Aurelia Kiwanis Club came to Storm Lake for a fun-filled day of tubing and boating.

These kids spent the summer doing service projects and other good deeds in their community.  An afternoon of fun in the sun is a reward for their hard work.

"Fifth grade is the class that we work with, and we just do things with them, volunteer work, and this is kind of pay back for doing some of the volunteer work they do," Dick Anderson, Event Organizer.

Seven boat owners also volunteered their time, energy, and tube-tipping expertise.

"It's good to see how the Alta and Aurelia communities have come together and have these kids doing these things. It just makes for a fun week," Tim Peterson, Volunteer.

The fifth and sixth graders that are out here are so excited about spending the day on the lake and about the pizza party. But the adults that are running the event are excited to be here, too. There's a reason they've been running the event for over ten years.

"We live close to a lake, we're only eight miles away, but some of the kids don't get on a boat as much as they'd like to, and just seeing their faces when they get on a tube and get spun out and get thrown outside the wake, it's a lot of fun," Peterson said.

Proving that making a difference in your community can be fun too.
