Nebraska ranked 35th in total defense last season according to NCAA.com.
LINCOLN, Neb. (KTIV) -
When it comes to Nebraska football the conversation usually revolves around national championships, conference titles and the Blackshirts.
As the saying goes, defense wins championships.
But, the Huskers haven't claimed a conference crown since 1999 or a national title since 1997.
Last season, Nebraska ranked 35th in total defense and was gashed at times - namely in the Big Ten Championship and the Capital One Bowl - both were losses.
To coaches, the 2013 squad has looked impressive the first week of camp.
"In terms of depth of talent, it's as good as we've had, since we've been here," Defensive coordinator John Papuchis said. "I'm not saying this is going to be the best defense we have, and I know sometimes quotes get misconstrued. What I'm saying is that athletically and talent wise, this year and over the course of the next couple of years, we're going to be an athletic group and I feel good about the direction we're heading."
Nebraska kicks the season off Aug. 31, against Wyoming.
