The Morningside volleyball team was picked to finish eighth in the GPAC Preseason Coaches' poll.
The last time they were picked that low was 2011. They won the regular season title and tournament championship that season.
The Mustangs are hoping to prove voters wrong again, repeat history and claim the 2013 GPAC crown.
Last year, M'side finished 17-16 and also advanced to the national tournament for the fourth time in five seasons.
With 23 underclassmen on their roster and just four seniors, the preseason poll is enough bulletin board material to fire the team up.
"We don't talk much about the preseason rankings," Head Coach Sara Horn said. "We did mention that we were picked to finish 8th and that two years ago we were also picked to finish 8th and we definitely talked about that. We're going to do what it takes to finish back on top."
"I think a lot of people don't know what they're going to bring because there are so many new people," senior Maggie Vondrak added. "I think that's going to be to our advantage because people aren't going to know what to expect. We're underdogs, but I'd rather be an underdog than on top, especially at this time in the year because it gives you more motivation. It's going to make us work a lot harder to get up there."
The Mustangs open the season next weekend at the Red Raider Classic on Aug. 23, in Orange City.
