Iowa honors veterans through voter program

Posted: Updated:

Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz started the "Honor a Vet With Your Vote" program last year as a way to increase voter participation and to honor past and present members of the military.

Schultz says he hopes the program reminds Americans why we have this right.

"To encourage people to vote and to remind them why they have this precious right to vote," Schultz said. "There are some people that don't vote, and the idea is to encourage people and remind them: You have this precious right to vote. Let's not waste it."

Those who go on the Iowa Secretary of State's website have the option to enter a veteran to be honored by submitting information and a story about a veteran they know.
