CUSHING, Iowa (KTIV) -

The final tally is in from the inaugural Uncle Ben 5K Run/Walk this past weekend in Cushing, Iowa and organizers say it far surpassed their expectations. Nearly 250 people took part and raised $9,350 for physical fitness equipment and programs at Siouxland elementary schools.

It was set up as a competition to give the top participating school half of the proceeds followed by second place with 30% and third place with 20% percent. River Valley School finished first, followed by Cherokee and then Galva-Holstein. In all, ten schools took part.

The race was founded by "Uncle Ben" Carstens to inspire his nieces and nephews to stay fit.
