When he was hired, Trever Case was Sioux City West's third head coach in four years. In those previous four years, the Wolverines won a total of five games. The three wins in 2012 were part of an attitude adjustment.
"I think it's a little bit of a change in mindset," said Case. "The kids have always had a little bit of success in younger years and then as they move up it doesn't seem to transfer. I'm trying to get that to transfer. There's a few things that we've changed in the off-season workouts and that kind of stuff has been increased. I think kids are better prepared to make that step from JV or freshman up to varsity level."
West has 14 seniors on their varsity roster, but also 13 sophomores. One of those seniors is quarterback Dylan Urquidi, who threw for over 700 yards with 7 TD's last year. Tight end Colby Hill had four TD catches and averaged 32 yards per reception.
"We're young but we have a lot of speed," said West junior defensive back Ricky Quintana. "We have a lot of athletes that are young. We can make it happen. Our mindset is just to compete in every game and just play hard from start to finish regardless of what's going on."
On defense, Skyler Bauer was second on the team with 75 tackles. West was just one win away from making the playoffs last year and need to finish games.
"I feel like we're getting stronger, becoming more of a family than a team," said senior linebacker Skyler Bauer. "We really want to compete in games. We know we can compete in games. We want to bring that 'W' home."
"Last year I thought we did play hard," added Case. "I thought as the season went along, like you would hope, our team got better as the year went along. I thought at the end we were right there on the cusp of having a tenth game. That's kind of our goal this year is to compete and hopefully get ourselves a tenth game, meaning that we'd make the playoffs."
West opens at home against North on Thursday, August 29th. The Wolverines go to Sgt. Bluff-Luton in week two, then play Bishop Heelan and East before division play starts.
Tuesday at six we'll preview the North Stars.
