UPDATE: Authorities release names of victims of Sioux City house fire

Posted:

Local authorities are investigating the deaths of two people in Sioux City's Riverside area.

According to Sioux City Fire Marshal Mark Aesoph, authorities responded here to a small one-story white home at 1210 Wright Avenue shortly before 8:30 a.m.

At a News Conference at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sioux City Fire Rescue authorities said Susan and Steve Smid, both 58-years-old, were found dead in the home.

Aesoph would not elaborate, but did say it appears as the Smids died from smoke inhalation after a fire started on the stove in the kitchen.

Aesoph disclosed that an investigator with the state Fire Marshal's office is being brought in to help.

Officials say there were smoke detectors in the home, but they don't know if they were operational.

The bodies were removed about 20 minutes before 11 a.m., and taken away by ambulance, after investigators scoured the home and surrounding areas.
