At the beginning of last year, MOC-Floyd Valley knew it could accomplish something special. And, by season's end.
"We believed it," Head Coach Jon Mouw said. "It's nice to see them starting the season with that belief and that confidence that we can do something good if we want."
"Coming into this year we had a whole different mindset of, 'OK' we know our goal," Alexis Conaway added. "Now, we know what we need to do to get there."
It was the championship run that has prepared the team mentally for another grueling year on the court.
"At the state tournament you have a lot of pressure, I think if we can handle that, keep our cool, doing our best there, it'll help us for the rest of this season," senior Shelby Schouten said.
Iowa State recruit Alexis Conaway will once again power the Dutch attack. After leading Class 3A with nearly 500 kills a season ago, Mouw will rely heavily on the senior again.
"Alexis is one of those rare individuals," Mouw said. "We always know that if we're in trouble, we can throw her the ball and she'll usually do something pretty good with it."
With nine seniors leading the way and the preseason number one in 3A, the Dutch are eyeing their second straight trip to Cedar Rapids.
"It's hard not to look straight ahead to the state tournament," Schouten said. "But, we do need to take it one game at a time."
MOC-Floyd Valley begins the season with the Dutch Invite next Tuesday in Orange City.
