DENISON, Iowa (KTIV) -

Crawford County Memorial Hospital has a history of transformation. The most recent one occurred in 2011 with the debut of a new, state-of-the-art facility featuring a wide range of inpatient, outpatient, and diagnostic services.  Now administrators are planning to renovate some existing space and add on an additional 5,000 to 6,000 square feet to house an expansion of services.

"This is not a big hospital replacement project," said Bill Bruce, Crawford County Memorial Hospital CEO.

Instead, Bruce says, it's a transition featuring the addition of new nurse stations along with exam, procedure and patient rooms for general surgery services and the new OB/GYN specialist recently brought on staff.

"We have a building that is very flexible and easy to adapt to these transitions and services and it makes sense to offer OBGYN locally," said Bruce.

Bruce estimates it'll cost around $1.5 million, all of which will be paid for with out-of-hospital reserves.  Trustees hope to break ground sometime in November.  And, if weather cooperates, work could be wrapped by next spring.  New jobs and patients are expected to follow.

"It's a natural transition of just trying to serve the community and we have the structure here to be able to do it," said Bruce.

Among those who've been helping engineers design the new transition areas?  Some of the very physicians and nurses who'll be working in them.

The public will have a chance to weigh in on the expansion plans at a public meeting.  It's scheduled for Tuesday, September 17 at 5:30 p.m. at Crawford County Memorial Hospital.
