North will face West on Thursday night at Olsen Stadium in the first metro football game of 2013.
SIOUX CITY (KTIV) -
Sioux City West and North will among the first teams in Iowa to play a football game this season when they meet on Thursday night. The Wolverines and Stars combined to win just five games last season but this has been an intense rivalry since both schools opened in 1972.
The Wolverines were 3-6 a year ago in head coach Trever Case's first season. But West only had five total wins in the previous four years.
North was 2-7, and like West, only won one game in conference play, topping the Wolverines 37-6.
Sioux City's three public high schools are split into different Class 4A divisions for the first time, so the intra-city games won't have an effect on the playoffs, but it will still be spirited.
"I don't like the fact that the beginning games against your city don't mean as much anymore," said Case. "They're rivals now but they're really just preseason games because the only thing that matters is our five conference games. I guess that's both good and bad. You get to work out some kinks but you're working out kinks against your rival, for example, our first game, North."
"We know that West will have some very good skill kids," said North head coach Shawn Meth. "We feel right now that we have a pretty physical offensive and defensive line. We have all our skill kids back from last year so we're pretty excited."
West and North play at 7:30 on Thursday night at Olsen Stadium. The Wolverines will be the home team.
