Students in Hinton, IA get a taste of gourmet

Hinton Community Schools are working to spice up their lunch options.

On Monday, students from 6th to 12th grade had the chance to try a gourmet meal.

Chef Keith Nelson, who was trained at the Culinary Institute of America, cooked shrimp alfredo with bowtie pasta while kids lined up to try his creation.

Some of the other entrees the chef has served at various school districts include tortellini primavera, cajun shrimp, and chicken penne pasta.

Nelson said he tries to keep the meals healthy and unique.

"We just like to do things that most kids wouldn't see at a high school level. It's things that aren't maybe familiar to everyone," Nelson said.

The gourmet lunch costs $3.95, which is about $1.50 more than the regular lunch.

But, students were satisfied with the flavors, and weren't too concerned with the price.

Some said it was good to have a new option.

"It's really good because normally we get burgers or hot dogs or something like that, and today we got shrimp. I like shrimp a lot, and I like pasta. And, I also like Alfredo sauce. So, three goods things put into one," 7th Grader Fletcher Farrer said.

"I usually go with the cheeseburger or pizza cause it's really good, but I like pastas a lot, and it's nice to have more options, stuff that's fresh, and he makes it right there," Senior Lauren Hedlund said.

Chef Nelson will be cooking a gourmet meal for these students once a month.

He said this keeps it fresh and gives students something to look forward to.
