SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (KTIV/KUOO) -

An excavator accident sent one man to the hospital, just one day into tearing down the old Spirit Lake, Iowa City Hall.

According to the Spirit Lake Public Works director, while demolishing the building, the excavator fell through the floor.

The equipment, which was owned by Valley Contracting, of Estherville, Iowa, landed on its side in the basement.

The accident happened at about 9:30 Tuesday morning.

Paramedics took the operator to the Spirit Lake hospital with several cuts from broken glass.

Crews brought in a crane to lift the excavator out of the hole, but that crane wasn't big enough.

But, city officials say they brought in a bigger one, Wednesday morning, which was able to remove the excavator.

Demolition on the old city hall started Monday, and the accident is not expected to delay the project.

Work should be done by the end of the week.
