On a day that first responders are often remembered for their courage, folks in Sioux City thanked those who help keep us safe every day.

The Center for Siouxland's Volunteer Center served up coffee and donuts to local paramedics, police officers, and firefighters for the first annual "Coffee Appreciation for First Responders" on Wednesday.

Event organizers say that first responders risk their lives every day, and the gathering was a small gesture to thank them for their continued service to others.

"I was thinking about what 9/11 means, and why we are now memorializing 9/11, and I wanted to thank all of our first responders- our police, our fire, our rescue, our EMTs, our veterans- that rush in to take care of a difficult situation and never thinking of their own lives," event coordinator Terssa Markworth said.

The event ran for two hours and was sponsored by Hy-Vee, Texas Roadhouse and Starbucks, who provided the spread.
