Iowa Military Conference comes to Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

The University of Northern Iowa will hold the fourth annual Iowa Military and Veteran's Services Conference Monday in Cedar Falls.

This year's title is "Uncamouflaging Campus Diversity: Creating Transparency through Cultural Competence." The conference is meant to educate the public on military culture, and how to help military men and women transition from military to civilian life.

Currently, there are approximately 300 military students enrolled at UNI. Those students, along with veterans that are going back to school, can benefit from the conference. Any student still receiving military benefits is invited as well.

Some of the topics to be discussed are suicide prevention and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Military and Veteran Student Services at UNI said the purpose is education and to help people understand that experiences are much different when living in military culture.

Services Coordinator Julia Heuer said that understanding can often be the best form of support.

"That's not just feeling patriotic and thanking a veteran always, it's going that extra mile to understand what their experiences have been and it also helps them feel more comfortable, helps them open up about the needs that they have," Heuer said.

The conference is 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Maucker Union on the UNI campus. It's free for UNI employees and all full-time students.

A military and veteran job fair will also be on the campus Monday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. All members of the community are welcome to the employment fair.
