Centsable Health: Tasty tailgating substitutes worth trying


At most tailgate parties there is a lot of great tasting food that isn't always the healthiest for us.  That's why Fareway Foods Registered Dietitian, Whitney Packebush, is sharing some ideas that will allow you to cut out some of those calories and still enjoy the party.

Calorie Saver:

  • Potato chips - 150 calories per serving
  • Tortilla chips - 140 calories per serving

Not a huge calorie difference, but tortilla chips are made with whole grain corn making them an overall healthy choice.

  • Cheese dip - about 300 calories per half cup
  • Black bean and corn salsa - 128 calories per half cup

Cut calories by more than half
Additional fiber and protein
Can be eaten cold or room temperature

  • Scotcharoo - 240 calories per 2 bars
  • Grilled pineapple - 80 calories per cup

By grilling pineapple it helps bring out the flavor to help feed that sweet tooth.

  • Potato salad - 263 calories per cup
  • Potato packet - 145 calories per half large potato
