Dirt was turned at the corner of 6th and Jackson Streets in downtown Sioux City to begin construction of Shepherd's Garden.
The area will be built in three phases.
It will cost about $810,000 to complete.
Organizers say the garden provides some much needed green space.
They also hope it will revitalize the downtown by creating a safe and attractive place for the community.
"The value of a prayerful space so approximate to the hospital and downtown businesses, a place where people can kind of step out and take a breath and be still," said Rev. Matthew Miller of First Presbyterian Church.
Miller says if you want to get involved, trees, benches, and pavers that are part of the design still need to be donated.
The project is expected to be complete by the end of next summer.
