Fire destroys businesses in downtown Woodbine, Iowa

Flames and smoke could be seen for miles after fire broke out in downtown Woodbine, Iowa on Thursday afternoon.

Crews from several nearby towns responded to help the community protect as many businesses as possible.

Authorities say the fire, believed to have started in the back of a flower shop, was still smoldering into the evening hours.

Woodbine is a town of about 1,500 in Harrison County, Iowa, which is south of Sioux City.

Firefighters were called to the downtown business area about 3:30 p.m.

A business called Everything Ellen Flower Shoppe on Walker Street is one of the taller buildings in the community.

Community leaders are still in shock at the amount of damage done in a short amount of time.

Woodbine Mayor Bill Hutcheson said the fire spread through the flower store and to a nearby bar called the Corner Palace.  He said it also damaged The Golden Age Senior Center.

While the fire is out, crews are still locating hot spots.  They'll be on scene through the night monitoring the situation.

The State Fire Marshal is expected to investigate on Friday.
