1,800 UnityPoint Health hospital patients' records may be at risk following a security breach


An investigation is underway at UnityPoint Health after a security breach involving medical records of about 1,800 patients.

Hospital officials say in early August, UnityPoint detected a patter of unusual access to certain patient data in its electronic medical record system.

They say an unauthorized person employed by a third-party gained access by someone who had access to the records.

The hospital has reported this activity to police.

UnityPoint has put in safeguards to prevent this from happening again.

Officials say records of 72 patients in Sioux City were compromised.

Those people will be contacted on what they need to do next.
