Rep. Steve King said to be "safe" after shots fired near White House

Posted:

A spokesperson for Rep. Steve King says he is safe after shots were fired near Capitol Hill this afternoon.  Sarah Wells cannot say if the Congressman was in the Capitol building when the gun was fired.

As a warning was sounded, the House abruptly went into recess and lawmakers left the chamber floor.  The White House was quickly locked down after the incident.

The shooting comes two weeks after a deadly shooting at the nearby Navy Yard, and it comes amid a government shutdown.
