Iowa National Guard laying off 100 more employees

Posted: Updated:
JOHNSTON (KWWL) - The Iowa National Guard announced on Thursday evening that they will lay off an additional 100 state employees as a result of the continued federal government shutdown.

In a release received by KWWL at about 5 p.m. Thursday evening, Colonel Greg Hapgood announced that an additional 100 Iowa Department of Public Defense employees were told earlier in the afternoon they would be temporarily laid off for up to 60 days beginning on Friday, October 11.

The Iowa National Guard told us on September 30 that they would layoff 1,100 employees as a result of the federal government shutdown due to the expiration of the Continuing Resolution at midnight on Sept. 30.  The majority of those employees went back to work on Monday following an interpretation of the Pay Our Military act by the U.S. Departments of Defense and Justice.

The 100 employees that will be laid off on October 11, were originally scheduled to have a 30-day temporary layoff beginning on Friday, October 18. This newly announced layoff is in lieu of that.

Five federal technicians remain furloughed until the shutdown ends or they are recalled by the Department of Defense and 16 additional State of Iowa employees are on a 20-day layoff.

2,100 full-time Iowa National Guard employees remain on duty. That includes Active Guard and Reserve military personnel and federal technicians.

Hapgood also says that drill scheduled for Iowa National Guard units and personnel scheduled for October 11-20 has been canceled. Rescheduling of all canceled training assemblies will be announced after the shutdown has ended.
